Questions around national provisions: The case of nano labelling rules and titanium dioxide ban in France
The EFLA workshop dedicated to Questions around national provisions: the case of nano labelling rules and titanium dioxide ban in France took place in Brussels on 12th December 2018.At the workshop participants were presented with an overview of the difficulties concerning detection of nanomaterials in foods by Dr Jan Mast, Head of Service Trace Elements and Nanomaterials at Sciensano (Belgium). In addition, we welcomed Dr Jacques-Aurélien Sergent, Corporate Product Safety Toxicologist at Solvay, presenting the industry perspective on nanomaterials including the aspects of their labelling and the titanium dioxide ban in France. The presentations were followed by a discussion on legal issues concerning nanomaterials labelling.

National sanctions for infringements of the Food Information to Consumers Regulation 1169/2011
The objective of this workshop is to provide participants with an overview of the various sanctions in different EU Member State national legislations. Speakers will make short presentations from their respective countries and will provide insights into the application of the national sanctions based on practical experience to date. Confirmed speakers include Andreas Meisterernst (Germany), Paola Corte (Italy), Vicente Rodriguez Fuentes (Spain), Jean Savigny (Belgium) and Andreas Natterer (Austria).

Processing aids
Guest speakers included Mr. Jiri Sochor (DG SANTE, European Commission), who summarised the current regulatory situation for processing aids in the EU and touched upon the work on the guidance for safe use of processing aids (based on Codex guidelines CAC/GL 75-2010), Mr. Anders Liljegren (EU Specialty Food Ingredients), who presented the industry perspective on the regulatory environment for the use of processing aids in food manufacturing in the EU, and Mrs. Sonja Schulz (ZENK), who focused on the legal concept of processing aids and the interpretation of the European Court of Justice. The presentations were followed by a discussion session.

Country of Origin Labelling
The workshop included an overview of the state of play on the question of origin (Mr. Peter Loosen, BLL), a closer look at national rules on origin labelling in France (Ms. Nicole Coutrelis, Coutrelis & Associés), Spain (Mr.Vicente Rodriguez Fuentes, Legal Agrifood Abogados) and Italy (Mr. Ferdinando Albisinni, Università della Tuscia) and a presentation of the results of a survey on national COOL schemes, Poland (Ms. Joanna Krakowiak, Wardynski and Partners). The presentations were followed by a discussion session.

Novel Foods
Guest speaker at the EFLA workshop on novel foods was Dr Stephen Johnson of the Food Standards Agency UK, who presented an overview of the new EU legislation on novel foods, Regulation (EU) 2015/2283. With implementing measures due to be proposed at that time, it was also an opportunity for participants to discuss issues of interpretation.
Revision of Regulation 882/2004 on official controls
Dr Ulrich Herzog, Chief Veterinary Officer of the Austrian Ministry of Health, Ms. Katharina Kossdorff, managing director of the Food Industries Association of Austria, and Andreas Müller, Head of Vienna Food Inspection Authority, member and former Secretary General of the European Working Community for Food-Inspection and Consumer Protection presented some insights on the upcoming revision of Regulation (EC) 882/2004.
