It is from its members and them alone that the EFLA
draws its means of subsistence and of development. The EFLA is a
non-profit-making association which only exists thanks to the fees
paid by the members. They are described by the bylaws as 'active
members' and their purpose is to achieve together the objectives
that they hold in common. The amount of yearly fees is determined
by the General Assembly; currently it amounts to 100 € for
individual members, 75 € for retired members and students,
and 1 000 € for corporate members.
The EFLA recognises a final category of members: that of honorary
members, which can be conferred by the Board to 'any person of
international repute who has made a significant contribution to
the development or harmonisation of Food Law'. It has always
been considered by the Board that the status of honorary members
should be reserved for high-level specialists in food law or food
sciences, whose fame goes far beyond the borders of their country
of origin. The honorary members are invited to attend Board meetings
and have a consultative voice there if they are not already part
of it.
The same applies in practice to former presidents (called honorary
presidents) of the EFLA although the Bylaws do not make mention
of this. Indeed, it has become a tradition to invite the former
presidents, on a personal and consultative basis, to all the meetings
of the Board, in consideration of their experience and the devotion
they demonstrated in the course of their mandate.
